National organization offers school resource officer course in Baltimore County, Md.

Week-long course provides specialized training needed by newly assigned SROs

May 15, 2018 – HOOVER, Ala. – The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) – the world’s leader in school policing – will conduct its Basic School Resource Officer (SRO) Course in Baltimore County, Md. May 21 to 25. The Baltimore County Police Department will host the five-day, 40-hour course at a facility in Lutherville-Timonium. It is open to any law enforcement officer from any jurisdiction, as well as educators and administrators. As of the date of this news release, seats were still available.

“Like special weapons and tactics, hostage negotiation or any other specialized form of police work, officers must receive specialized training to be successful as SROs,” said NASRO president Don Bridges, himself a Baltimore County SRO. “Putting law enforcement officers in schools without this specialized training can lead to a number of unintended consequences.”

The NASRO Basic SRO Course emphasizes three main areas of instruction:

  • Functioning as a police officer in a school setting.
  • Working as a resource and problem solver.
  • Developing teaching skills.

Attendees will gain a solid working knowledge of nationally accepted SRO best practices, including how to establish lasting partnerships with their schools.
